Short-term medical is cheap for a reason, and the reason is the list of things it doesn't cover.
It works for one job
Covering a known, short gap — a new job starting in six weeks — when you're healthy and have no ongoing prescriptions. For that, it's fine and it's inexpensive.
Where it hurts people
Pre-existing conditions are typically excluded outright. Benefit caps are hard. Prescriptions, maternity and mental health are usually out. A serious claim can exceed the cap and leave you with the balance.
The honest rule of thumb
Under three months and healthy: reasonable. Longer than that, or any ongoing condition: you want real coverage.
