How coverage works in Montana

Montana residents without an employer plan generally have four routes: Medicaid if income qualifies, a subsidized ACA Marketplace plan, COBRA if you've just left a job, or a private PPO plan outside the marketplace.

The private route is the one people know least about. It's medically underwritten and unsubsidized, which is exactly why it's cheaper for many healthy applicants — and exactly why it isn't right for everyone. A licensed Montana advisor will tell you which of the four fits your numbers.

General information only, not advice about your situation and not a quote. Availability, pricing and underwriting rules vary by state and carrier.

Montana questions

What Montana residents ask first.

Can I enroll in a private plan in Montana outside open enrollment?

Yes. Private PPO plans aren't tied to the marketplace calendar, so Montana residents can apply any day of the year. Marketplace plans through HealthCare.gov generally need open enrollment or a qualifying life event.

Is a private PPO better than a HealthCare.gov plan?

It depends on your subsidy and your health. If HealthCare.gov is taking most of your premium off, it is hard to beat. If you're healthy and earn above the subsidy range, a private plan is often the lower premium.

Will my doctors in Billings or Missoula be covered?

Most PPO networks are broad and nationwide, so in most cases yes. An advisor checks your specific doctors and hospitals in Montana before you enroll, not after.

Does Montana require me to have health insurance?

Montana doesn't currently charge its own penalty for going without coverage, but a gap still leaves you exposed to the full cost of care.
