Private PPO coverage, reviewed by a licensed advisor
Industries We Serve

Health insurance for consultants.

COBRA keeps your old plan at full unsubsidized cost. A private PPO is usually the cheaper way to stay covered between contracts.

  • Pre-existing conditions covered
  • Enroll any day of the year
  • A licensed advisor, no pressure
  • No cost to talk it through

What usually goes wrong

Between engagements is exactly when COBRA bills arrive. Most people in your situation land on the marketplace, see an unsubsidized bronze premium around $750 a month with a deductible north of $5,000, and conclude that health coverage simply isn't affordable. That conclusion is often wrong — it's just that nobody showed you the other shelf.

Private PPO plans sit outside the marketplace. They're medically underwritten, which means not everyone is approved, and they aren't subsidized. What they offer in exchange is a materially lower premium, a broad nationwide network, and no enrollment window to wait for.

What a private PPO gives you

  • Pre-existing conditions covered
  • Enroll any day of the year — no six-week window
  • Broad nationwide PPO networks
  • Keep your own doctor in most cases
  • Your details are never sold to third parties

And the honest caveat: if you qualify for Medicaid or a significant ACA subsidy, that will beat this. Your advisor will say so rather than sell around it.

Before you enroll

Three things consultants should check first.

  1. 01

    Leaving corporate

If you've just left a salaried role, COBRA and a private plan are the two to compare first.

  2. 02

    Client travel

If clients take you across the country, a broad network matters more than a slightly lower premium.

  3. 03

    Your entity

An LLC or S-corp can change how premiums are deducted. Ask your accountant.

Questions we hear

Straight answers for consultants.

I just went independent. What should I do first?

Note your COBRA election deadline, then compare a private plan while that window is still open.

Can my consulting company pay the premium?

Often, depending on your structure. How it's treated for tax differs by entity type.

What if I go back to a salaried role?

A private plan doesn't lock you in. You can drop it when employer coverage begins.
